Discover the Origins of Platform Screen Doors.

In 1987, Westinghouse Platform Screen Doors (WPSD) carried out the first installation of a platform screen system in the world on the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). Full height platform screen doors were installed at all the existing underground MRT stations in Singapore and thereafter have been installed on all the subsequent new platforms on the system. Half height platform WPSD safety gates will be retrofitted into all existing elevated MRT stations by 2012 and are planned for all future new build elevated MRT stations.

Following the Singapore installation the demand for WPSD platform screen systems grew around the world as operators were quick to identify their benefits in safety and operational efficiency.
